You could call Cristóbal Balenciaga one of the founding fathers of high fashion. In his early days, he made clothing for Spanish royalty and aristocrats. During the Spanish Civil War, the talented designer uprooted his company to Paris, where his popularity intensified. By the 1950s, Balenciaga notably transformed the female silhouette and created the blueprint for fashions like the tunic dress, balloon skirt, and the high-waisted baby doll dress.
Under the leadership of creative director Demna, the fashion house has continued to pave the way for innovation. In its Spring 2022 collection, Demna explores our shifting sense of reality through the lens of technology. In a video directed by Quentin Deronzier, Balenciaga grasps futurism by applying 3D modeling, rotoscoping, and a slew of cutting-edge elements that set the tone for the collection.
The Spring 2022 ensemble speaks volumes for Balenciaga’s vision of technology overtaking reality. Patchwork dresses and graphic prints mimic computer icons, cyber goth-style raver pants look like a glimpse into the next millennia, and graphic tees hint seek authenticity with the message “Your Ad Here.” The collection also features deconstructed silhouettes, bold parkas and puffer jackets, a new signature tracksuit, and hardware-adorned denim.
