After a pigmented parade of bold shades like Kelly Green, Barbiecore Pink, Scarlet Orange and Cobalt Blue, we’ve been anticipating the reveal of Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year – a moment that helps set the tone for the new year just as we’re refreshing our wardrobes and reinventing ourselves.
The announcement is officially out, and let’s just say 2023’s new hue is the unique, strong, and bright yet warm energy we’ve been craving – a shade that crosses color categories while remaining classic and chic.
She’s marvelous, multi-faceted and made for a life lived, well, colorfully: She’s Viva Magenta!
Pantone says this punchy pigment represents excitement and joy while also looking to the future with optimism, hinting at the crossover between our physical world and the developing virtual one. “As virtual worlds become a more prominent part of our daily lives, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,” said Lee Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family, as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known” (New York Post).
“[Viva Magenta] is both powerful and empowering,” said Eiseman. According to the examples provided by the company, the color is crimson red, hot pink, fuchsia, raspberry, and maroon, all at once. It’s flowery and natural, but it’s also slick and shiny, just as good for lipstick and clothing as sports cars and cell phones (Refinery 29).
