Top Chefs: Notable Names Behind Aventura Mall’s Restaurants

Nothing brings people together quite like delicious food, and when it comes to sharing meals and great conversation, chefs are the artists; transforming their cultures, memories, lives and passions into rich recipes for all to enjoy.

Whether you’re visiting for some pre-holiday shopping or indulging in a delicious meal, we’re proud to offer a variety of restaurants and eateries featuring delectable dishes created by renowned culinary names, all of whom stem from different parts of the world.

We’ve rounded up several notable chefs whose creations can be enjoyed right here during your next visit to Aventura Mall.

Michael Mina, Ornos Estiatorio

Award-winning chef and restauranteur Michael Mina is known for his successful bold concepts throughout the United States, from California to Hawaii and New York. Aventura Mall visitors can now enjoy Chef Mina’s specialties locally at the recently debuted Greek concept, Ornos Estiatorio which is led by Chef Michael Mina and Las Vegas’ dynamic duo – Girair “Jerry” Goumroian and Chef Nikolaos Georgousis. The new, 160-seat restaurant offers traditional and simplistic yet flavorful Greek cuisine and is also home to South Florida’s first Fish Sommelier. “We want our guests to feel as if they have stepped onto the islands by capturing the beauty and simplicity that resembles the islands through our clean and authentic recipes, and relaxed atmosphere,” says Chef Michael Mina.

Born in Cairo, Egypt and raised in Washington State, Chef Mina has opened more than 45 dining outposts around the world, including the Michelin-starred MICHAEL MINA, his flagship restaurant in San Francisco. He has been a featured guest chef at the James Beard House numerous times and cooked for U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama.

José Mendín, Pubbelly Sushi

A five-time James Beard Award semifinalist for “Best Chef, Southeast,” Chef José Mendín is one of the names behind the award-winning Pubbelly Restaurant Group. Chef Mendín moved from Puerto Rico to Miami in 1998 to enroll at Johnson & Wales University, from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts. He went on to work with famous Michelin-starred chefs in Spain and eventually helped open several restaurants in London, Las Vegas, Chicago, and our very own Magic City, Miami.

It’s no surprise that Chef Mendín’s Pubbelly Sushi menu features an array of delicious Asian – Latin fusion dishes inspired by his heritage, time abroad and diverse industry experience.

Pubbelly Sushi is located in the Outdoor Courtyard across from Apple.

Juan Chipoco, CVI.CHE 105

A native of Peru, Juan Chipoco moved to Miami in 1994 and has been a restaurant industry trailblazer since his first post as a busboy many years ago. Since opening CVI.CHE 105, Chef Chipoco has remained at the helm of Miami’s gastronomic revolution. Industry leaders and fans of his restaurant continue to celebrate his influence on South Florida’s expansion and exploration of Peruvian cuisine. The award-winning CVI.CHE 105 is best known for its vast selection of creative and fresh ceviches and must-try traditional dishes.

CVI.CHE 105 is located in the Outdoor Courtyard next to Apple.

Guy Fieri, Chicken Guy!

One of The Food Network’s most popular faces, celebrity chef, restauranteur, TV host and New York Times best-selling author Guy Fieri is one of the most recognizable culinary influencers, with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Chef Fieri began his love affair with food as a child and eventually studied abroad in France, where he learned about international cuisines and further ignited his passion for food. He graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas with a degree in Hospitality Management and jumped headfirst into the restaurant business, ultimately opening his own casual dining concepts, winning several Food Network competitions, and hosting several of the network’s top-rated shows. His creations are enjoyed at his restaurants all over the globe, including here in Aventura at our very own Chicken Guy!, for which Guy Fieri spent two years perfecting the eatery’s fresh and flavorful hand-pounded fried chicken and 22 signature sauces “for every mood.”

Chicken Guy! is located on the Upper Level in Treats Food Hall.

Todd English, Figs Pizza + Pasta Bar

Recognized for his global success and philanthropic efforts, James Beard Foundation winner Todd English has an impressive portfolio that includes establishing one of the best-known restaurant brands in the United States, publishing critically-acclaimed cookbooks, and producing his own TV show. Chef English began his cooking career at 15 and eventually attended the Culinary Institute of America. He worked in restaurants throughout New York City and Italy before returning to the U.S. to become Executive Chef of a highly successful, award-winning Northern Italian restaurant in Massachusetts. He then went on to open his own restaurants and new food concepts, including Figs Pizza + Pasta Bar, a casual eatery that serves traditional and eclectic pizzas and handmade pastas, rooted in the belief that one should “never trust a round pizza.”

Sam Gorenstein, Zuuk Mediterranean Kitchen

A two-time nominee for the James Beard “Rising Star” award, Zuuk Mediterranean Grill’s Executive Chef Sam Gorenstein spent several years cooking in fine-dining kitchens in New York and Miami. Born in Colombia and of Syrian descent, he and his business partners honed in on the growing interest in Mediterranean food and decided to bring its flavors to Miami’s diverse melting pot in the form of a fast-casual concept. The chef’s cuisine is rooted in a bold yet complementary medley of unique, smoky, acidic, spicy and neutral flavors from Israel, Morocco, Syria and Greece, as well as a variety of healthy grains and vegetables. When asked about his approach to out-of-the-box ingredients, Chef Gorenstein encouraged the use of under-the-radar spices, including ras el hanout, Sumac, and schug, which he compares to “a spicy Mediterranean pesto.”
