As American shopping malls continue to change across the country, Aventura Mall is zealously expanding with a dynamic new wing that promises to deliver big on rousing experiences. The 315,000-square-foot section on the eastern edge of the center fuses retailers, restaurants, immersive contemporary art, a food hall and a VIP lounge.Everything is bathed in the sun’s rays filtering through a continuous skylight that hovers over the entire length of this modernist extension.
This evolutionary shift follows the stouthearted philosophy of Jackie Soffer, co-chair and CEO of Turnberry Associates, the owner and managing entity of the premier fashion destination. “Retail is certainly evolving and we’re always innovating to stay ahead of the curve,” Soffer explained. “Aventura Mall is now more than just a shopping destination. It’s a gathering place of dynamic, interactive experiences—from fashion to dining to culture, and more.”
These new creeds of communal engagement play out in a master plan envisioned by Venezuelan-born architect Carlos Zapata, who designed an area evocative of a contemporary town square, one that celebrates architecture, gastronomy and cultural enrichment. Zapata’s guiding principles—connectivity, integration and transparency—are the hallmarks of the wing’s distinctive design, and complement Turnberry’s progressive vision. According to Zapata, “Architecture has to be intense, or it’s not architecture.”
