As the song goes “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” Needless to say, this delicious frozen treat is one many of us have loved since childhood.
Kilwins, located on the lower level near Bloomingdales, takes visitors back to simpler times when the perfect night out ended with a stop at the local ice cream parlor. And the beloved brand scoops up more than just delicious flavors of ice cream in heavenly-scented waffle cones.
Customers who enter Kilwins’ sweet-smelling store may leave with more than just an ice cream cone, as delectable batches of fudge and caramel are made on-site daily. Guests can also pick up a variety of flavored popcorn to complement their sweet treats.
“We are constantly changing our flavor offerings,” said Edouard St. Hilarie, owner of the Aventura Mall Kilwins location. “There is always something new to experience.”
Edouard is a shining example of how one person’s determination can make a difference in the lives of others. His story is as American as the ice cream and fudge he serves.
Born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Edouard moved to the United States to receive a better education than he could get back home. For several years, he lived in New York and studied marketing before moving to Miami with his family. Eduard then worked as a teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools for 26 years before embarking on his current dream – owning an ice cream shop.
“My wife and I visited a Kilwins store in South Florida. We saw a lot of people outside and wanted to check it out,” says Edouard. “We had the ice cream and we loved it. We knew we wanted to have something like that.”
Edouard and his wife decided to take the risk and open their own Kilwins franchise in Hollywood. After a few years, the duo decided to move their store to Aventura Mall, where Edouard now manages the parlor with his son, Hans St. Hilarie.
“To run a store with my son is a dream come true,” says Edouard. “It’s the American Dream to be able to pass along something to your children. It is a way for me to continue him on his path to success.”
Beyond serving guests creamy ice cream, fudge, and caramel – Edouard wants Kilwins to be a safe haven for his workers. From first jobs to learning a new language, he wants to invest in his employees and offer them training to be successful in the Aventura community and far beyond.
“I’m a teacher at heart. I want to help them learn a trade, teach them the value of a strong work ethic, and see them become successful,” Edouard said.
As summer approaches, Edouard is excited to see his guests come back and enjoy a well-deserved treat.
His personal flavor recommendation: the “Nutcracker Sweet” popcorn or the “Classic Strawberry” ice cream.
