“Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women,” said the great Maya Angelou. International Women’s Day, happening March 8, is a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of women throughout history while paving the way for progress. This year, UN Women focuses on equality with its 2020 theme, I am Generational Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights.

Generational equality is an overarching focus of the UN Women’s efforts for the year. The organization recently created a new multigenerational campaign, Generation Equality. The campaign signifies the 25th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which was a progressive plan for female empowerment in China, and around the world.

Promise and opportunity lay ahead in 2020. While UN Women recognizes the historic Beijing Platform for Action, it’s also honoring many milestone moments in the equality movement. Of the many developments and gains, women are being celebrated for a five-year milestone towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals; the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security; and the 10th anniversary of UN Women’s establishment. Now that’s empowering!

In a world where women are fighting to get a seat at the table and have a voice, every moment matters. From International Women’s Day to every day, you have a voice. Happy

International Women’s Day!
