Hispanic Heritage Month: Trailblazing Fashion Designers

Every year, Americans from coast to coast observe Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15. And here in the cultural melting pot of South Florida, the Hispanic community is an essential part of what makes the Magic City, well, magical.

To honor this annual tribute to Hispanic Americans who have influenced and enriched our nation, we’re taking a look at some of our favorite names in fashion, including designers whose pieces are available here at Aventura Mall:

Carolina Herrera

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Carolina Herrera’s elegant and timeless pieces are infused with personality and have long been admired by celebrities, influencers, trailblazers, politicians, and everyday fashionistas. Carolina, who studied fashion design in New York City, is known for dressing first ladies, including Michelle Obama, and her stunning bridal gowns (one of which made a beautiful cameo in Sex and the City – The Movie).

Cuban-American designer Lazaro Hernandez, who hails from Miami, is one half of the Proenza Schouler brand. Hernandez studied fashion at Parsons School of Design in New York, where he met Jack McCollough. Together, they launched their fashion brand, which is known for unique proportions, funky silhouettes and its noteworthy fan base, which includes supermodel Kaia Gerber, Selena Gomez, Chloe Sevigny and more.

Manolo Blahnik

Iconic shoe designer Manolo Blahnik was born in Santa Cruz de la Palma on Spain’s Canary Islands. On a trip to New York City, he showed his designs to then Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland, and the rest is trend-setting history. His show-stopping pumps, boots, sandals, strappy heels and mules are coveted by everyone – from the fictional Carrie Bradshaw to models, leaders and the “it” girls of the fashion world.

A variety of Manolo Blahnik shoes are available at Nordstrom.

Manuel Barceló and Manuel Barceló, Jr. of Paloma Barcelo

In the 1950s, Spanish designer Manuel Barceló was inspired by the birth of his daughter, Paloma, and determined to create a footwear brand she would someday be proud to wear. The Paloma Barceló brand emerged in 1960, when Barceló founded Cosí Cosí Footwear and opened his first factory in Elche, Spain. Through his brilliant craftsmanship and relentless energy, he attracted the attention of renowned international brands and eventually launched Paloma Barceló as a footwear brand. His son, Manuel Barceló Jr., later took over, developing new techniques and incorporating organic materials into its styles. Today, all Paloma Barceló shoes are handcrafted in Spain and eco-friendly, utilizing a variety of natural fibers and stitched leather. The Aventura Mall store offers a unique collection of eye-catching Paloma Barceló footwear encompassing luxe booties and platform sneakers, signature chunky wedges, delicate flats and sandals, and more.

Paloma Barcelo is located on the upper level near Macy’s Men’s/Home Furniture.
