Get Your Yoga “Om” with Lululemon

We’re not going to bend over backwards to convince you, and this might be a stretch, but everyone can (and should!) practice yoga for its plethora of physical, mental and emotional health benefits.

Whether your idea of yoga is simply stretching and meditating for five minutes a day or competing with friends to see who can hold the most challenging aerial position, yoga is a practice that welcomes everyone to carve some much-needed time out of their busy schedules to pause in the name of inner peace. All it takes is a few minutes of mindfulness to move through the many feelings and emotions that come and go throughout a single day.

  1. 1. Let Go and Keep Calm

“Every single one of us has a powerful tool at our fingertips: being able to be fully aware of our breath … is one of our most valuable assets. It helps focus our attention on the gifts we have been blessed with and it can allow us to instantly shift to a place of surrender and peace.

As you wake up, sit on the edge of the bed, letting your hands rest on your lap, close your eyes and take three long deep breaths. Gently follow these three deep breaths by three things you are grateful for.”

“I start by writing a list of all the things that are out of my control next to what is in my control. And gratitude is staring back at me in those words. Nothing is too small for that list, because it’s the little things that make the biggest impact, like marmite on toast in bed, or moving my body to a banging playlist. Then I take 10 breaths.”

3. Manage Stress

“A good way to work through difficult emotions in our head is to get to work in our body. Yoga, breathwork, brisk walking, dance – whatever makes you feel connected to your body can help when you’ve spent most of your day disconnected from it.”

“Meditation has proven to be incredibly effective at regulating our nervous systems and calming the adrenaline and cortisol many of us are feeling right now. Start with five minutes a day, every day, and gradually work your way up.”

4. Sleep Better

“As part of your bedtime routine, begin by doing a quick and simple reflection/check-in with yourself, noting what you observe. Scan your body to bring awareness to what you feel and where. Consider your restfulness and honour that your body needs rest each night. Begin the breathwork by slowing down your breath for five cycles. And if you want even deeper breath, INHALE and count to five, HOLD for two counts, EXHALE for five and HOLD for two. … repeat five cycles.”

5. Tap into Your Intuition through Gratitude

“Find a place… where you can focus on your breath for at least one minute and up to five minutes. Close your eyes and acknowledge the gift of each breath. Try steadying your breathing, in and out, for at least five rounds. When you are ready and your breath feels balanced… take out a journal or something to write on, and list all the people, animals, or things you’re grateful for. Try this practice for at least seven days and keep coming back and hopefully adding to your list.”

6. Manage Tricky Relationships by Tuning into Yourself

“Notice your body and tune in to see if you feel uneasy, tense or short of breath. The body is a powerful barometer for truth, and it will let you know how someone is making you feel. We can create space by prioritizing ourselves first. Instead of succumbing to a challenging or toxic situation, can you choose a mindful practice such as going for a run, doing yoga or meditating? And finally, if it is safe to do so, use your voice. Expressing how you feel and what you need can be helpful in creating a healthy boundary and protecting your energy.”

7. Move Through Loneliness with Purpose

“Each phase of ourselves and of our lives we enter, serves a specific purpose…It’s all part of the healing, the clearing out, the making space for new energy and life to flow, to cultivate our sense of purpose…Sometimes when we are in a dark place, it feels a lot like being buried – but what is the difference to being planted? Our perspective.

A Māori worldview of creation is that there’s Io (Supreme being, god, consciousness) and from Io came the realm of potential (Te Kore), which phases into Te Pō, into Te Ao Mārama.

There are different phases for different phases:

  • Te Kore: potential, infinite possibility, dreams, thoughts, ideas,
  • Te Pō: the isolated darkness, confusion, chaos, unknown, where things come apart/come together
  • Te Ao Mārama: world of light, enlightenment, physical manifestation

So, understanding that loneliness, isolation, and frustration are part of the creation process allows me to sit through those moments and trust that light, that breakthrough, that achievement will always come. It’s part of the creation process, it’s whakapapa, it’s part of my DNA and how I came to be.”
