Celebrate World Art Day with the Aventura Arts Collection

When it comes to enjoying the South Florida lifestyle, we aim to impress. We’re constantly seeking new and exciting ways to appeal to our guests, from experiential retail activations and eclectic dining options to captivating, one-of-a-kind art pieces from world-renowned artists.

World Art Day is April 15, and if you’re looking for an unconventional take on a trip to the museum, search no further, as we’re sharing details on a major gem: the Arts Aventura Mall collection, which features more than 20 pieces of vibrant and singular artwork. The impressive program has been in the making for more than 12 years, growing with pieces in various mediums and styles. From colossal installations to photo-worthy backdrops, it’s brimming with creativity and culture.

Here are just six of the numerous Arts Aventura Mall pieces you can view, interpret and photograph during your next visit:

Gorillas in the Mist by The Haas Brothers

Playful and interactive, Gorillas in the Mist is sure to leave shoppers smiling. The spirited fountain, crafted by The Haas Brothers, is blithe and whimsical. The artistic duo created the bronze sculpture exclusively for Aventura Mall, making it an exceptional piece in our collection.

The unique sculpture in the outdoor courtyard is comprised of three gorillas and four tall trees that spout water to create an interactive playground. Twins Nikolai and Simon Haas designed the statue to signify “the roles that certain people can play: a partner, a good friend, and a child,” they shared. Fusing nature and perspective, Gorillas in the Mist allows visitors to interpret and interact with the art from different angles.

ARROWS AND FLOWERS by Virgil Abloh and Takashi Murakami

Virgil Abloh is a powerhouse designer. The Off-white founder now spearheads Louis Vuitton’s menswear as Artistic Director. His creative talent doesn’t end with fashion. The prolific designer teamed up with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami to create ARROWS AND FLOWERS, an emblem of two worlds joining together in unison.

The neon sign was exhibited at the Gagosian Paris gallery for Abloh and Murakami’s Technicolor 2 collection before finding its home here in Aventura. The radiant, colorful statement piece fuses each artist’s work and their trademark iconography. “I like that collaborating is evidence of being human. This is what happens when you join two people that are similar but very different. Our works of art are born from that dialogue,” says Abloh.

Murakami’s interpretation of art is innovative and poetic. “We want to see the newest things. That is because we want to see the future, even if only momentarily. It is the moment in which, even if we don’t completely understand what we have glimpsed, we are nonetheless touched by it. That is what we have come to call art,” says the artist.

The artistic partners not only left their individual creative marks but also uplifted each other’s work to an exciting and provoking final piece.

Florida’s Soul by Jaume Plensa

Sometimes a sculpture says a thousand words – literally. Spanish artist Jaume Plensa is known for sculpting grand seated figures shaped from letters and symbols. His recognizable work can be found in Chicago, Houston, Singapore, France, Sweden and, of course, in Aventura Mall’s Center Court.

As a venerated artist, Plensa has won numerous national and international awards. One of these famed creations is sitting on the Lower Level for all visitors to take in. In Florida’s Soul, letters created from stainless steel form the ‘universal man,’ modeled after Plensa himself. Seated upon a rock, the man reflects upon the world around him and welcomes viewers to do the same.

Eye Benches by Louise Bourgeois

Considered one of the most respected artists of our time, Louise Bourgeois holds the distinction of being the first female artist to be given a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her work, which is featured in most of the world’s leading museums, is also available for viewing here at Aventura Mall … and our visitors aren’t the only ones doing the watching.

Located on the Lower Level of the Nordstrom Wing, the surrealistic Eye Benches appear to follow viewers with their disembodied gaze, reflecting how Bourgeois feels about what it means to truly see: “Whether it is an eye that sees the reality of things or whether it is an eye that sees a world of fantasy…it is the quality of your eyes and the strength of your eyes that are expressed here.”

Veiled in a Dream by Wendell Castle

Considered the father of the American art furniture movement, Wendell Castle’s work conjures sarcasm and humor with unique materials. Blurring the lines between form and function, his award-winning sculptures challenge the practical definition of furniture. Castle’s work is found in more than 40 museums and cultural institutions worldwide, including the Arts Aventura Mall Collection.

In Veiled in a Dream, a piece located on the Upper Level near Zara, Castle experiments with bronze to create a sculpture that provides visitors with both a chair to sit on and an object to admire. Take a break from your stroll through the collection to sit down and appreciate Castle’s work firsthand.

Aventura Slide Tower by Carsten Höller

One of the most thrilling pieces within the Arts Aventura Mall collection is the landmark Aventura Slide Tower, a nearly 93-foot-tall spiral structure by Belgian artist Carsten Höller. Located in the Outdoor Courtyard, the sky-high design seamlessly pairs artistry with exhilaration. The creation is a signature of Höller, who is known globally for his larger-than-life structures.

In addition to the numerous pieces dispersed throughout our shopping center, Avant Gallery, located on the Lower Level near Nordstrom, is a 5,000 square-foot exhibition space featuring custom-built booths that call to mind the atmosphere of an art fair. Every booth represents a solo exhibition for each artist, including Skyler Grey, Paul Rousso, BNS, Terry O’Neill, Josh Mayhem, Invader, LaSso, Tim Tadder, Becky Rosa, Will Kurtz, El Pez and Mauricio Avayu. Founded by Dmitry Prut in Miami Beach in 2007, Avant Gallery’s activation will be on display at Aventura Mall through 2021 and offers private appointments with its staff of experienced art consultants.
