Capturing a Whimsical Spirit

Experiential art and a sense of community are among Aventura Mall’s most defining attributes. And nowhere is that more evident than in the shopping center’s new expansion wing, where visitors encounter, among other surprises, the new Gorillas in the Mist, designed by twins Nikolai Haas and Simon Haas (a.k.a. The Haas Brothers). The whimsical fountain, which features three larger-than-life bronze gorillas and four massive bronze trees circulating and spraying water, is already a hit with Aventura Mall’s youngest visitors.

“Gorillas in the Mist is a portrait of the people we most care about,” say the brothers. “Less specifically in terms of actual people, but more of the roles that certain people can play: a partner, a good friend and a child. It’s a fountain and a playground, built specifically with children in mind.”

While growing up in Austin, they “used to sneak onto the University of Texas campus on balmy nights and jump into the fountains with large cast bronze statues. We’ve created this piece in the hopes of capturing the spirit of those moments.”

Gorillas in the Mist is part of the ever-evolving Arts Aventura Mall program, which includes more than a dozen museum-quality works positioned throughout the center.
